Why did the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explode?

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion occurred on April 26, 1986, in Pripyat, Ukraine, which was then part of the Soviet Union. The disaster was caused by a combination of factors, primarily a flawed reactor design and a series of human errors during a safety test.

The RBMK (Reaktor Bolshoy Moshchnosti Kanalniy) reactor used at the Chernobyl power plant had a design flaw that made it inherently unstable under certain conditions. In particular, the reactor had a positive void coefficient, which means that as water coolant turned into steam, the reactivity of the core increased. This characteristic made the reactor more susceptible to a runaway reaction and a sudden power surge.

On the night of the accident, the operators at Chernobyl were conducting a test to simulate a power outage and assess the capability of the reactor's turbines to provide power to the cooling system until the emergency generators came online. However, due to the reactor's design flaws and several mistakes made during the test, a dangerous chain reaction occurred.

During the experiment, the operators reduced the reactor's power to a level much lower than its safe operating range, which caused the reactor to become increasingly unstable. Additionally, some of the control rods were fully withdrawn from the core, exacerbating the reactivity.

Unfortunately, the test was not properly planned or executed. An unforeseen power surge occurred, leading to a massive increase in steam pressure, which ruptured the fuel channels, caused a steam explosion, and subsequently ignited a graphite fire. The fire released large amounts of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, spreading them over a wide area.

The explosion and subsequent fire resulted in the release of a significant amount of radioactive material, including highly dangerous isotopes such as iodine-131 and cesium-137. This radioactive contamination had severe consequences for the immediate vicinity of the reactor and caused long-term health and environmental effects over a larger region. The Chernobyl disaster remains one of the worst nuclear accidents in history.
