Epox EP-8RDA+

Epox EP-8RDA+

Socket-A (Athlon / Duron).

Epox EP-8RDA+

Epox EP-8RDA+

Epox

Epox EP-8RDA+

AMD Epox EP-8RDA+

System Performance Epox EP-8RDA+

Epox EP-8RDA + old motherboard for AMD processors

Today we will pay tribute to the old motherboard based on the nVidia nForce2 chipset, for processors from AMD - Athlon and Duron, on socket A - this is Epox EP-8RDA +

At the end of 2002 and the beginning of 2003, it was one of the most attractive motherboards for AMD processors, but not at a price - its cost started from just over $ 100. It was a fast, very stable motherboard with overclocking support, but also with its drawbacks ... I must say, it is already described on the Internet, so I will try not to repeat it. Personally, I dealt with three of these - I assembled a PC for two on order, on one (the instance considered today), I did a little work myself, and then she stood for a long time in her cousin's home PC ...

So, the ATX form factor board, its dimensions are 300 mm by 245 mm. On the board there is an EP-8RDA + marking, in another corner - Made in Taiwan, revision - REV: 1.1

The processor socket - Socket A or Socket 462, is located at the very top of the board - I don’t know what the designers of this motherboard were thinking about? The fact is that many coolers cannot be installed on it - they abut against the power supply, which in the computer case is immediately above the motherboard, almost presses to its edge ...

Below the connector is a large aluminum bullshit with the Epox logo ... it's the pretentious North Bridge radiator. Again, the designer was stupid - we chased the appearance, forgetting about the functionality. Although this radiator is massive, but due to an ill-conceived design, it does not dissipate heat well - the radiator is always hot ...

We remove the radiator, remove the thermal grease. We see the North Bridge, on it there is a marking: the NVIDIA logo, then nForce2 SSP G31872.1 0301A3 ...

Three slots for RAM ... strangely grouped ... the memory here can work in two-channel mode, and here you need to correctly install two memory slots ... but specifically how - I don’t remember anymore, we need to look for a manual for this motherboard and to read. It is a pleasure I provide you.

There are two microcircuits between the processor socket and the slots for RAM: both from Attansic ... ATXP1 TPV281401AC and ATTP1 - this is the protection of the processor by temperature. There are also two three-pin connectors for a processor cooler and a system one - CPU FAN and PW FAN ...

To the other side of the processor socket, a 20-pin motherboard power connector and CPU power circuit. There are two pins for the jumper - JCLK, here we set the system bus frequency, FSB - if there is no jumper, then the value is 100/133 MHz, if the jumper is on, it means 133/166 MHz. The processor power circuits consist of chokes, electrolytic capacitors, B55NF03L MOSFETs and a 3-phase IRU3055 power controller (PWM controller). Another single MOSFET is NIKO P45N02LD ... Near the power connector and AGP slot, a Realtek RTL8201BL network controller chip ...

These are internal audio connectors ... The audio codec is a Realtek ALC650 chip ... SPDIF connector ... Winbond W83627HF-AW chip, it implements system monitoring of the motherboard ... Connector for connecting the MIDI port, GAME is signed - a mandatory connector in those days on motherboards and on sound cards. Between the lower PCI slots is another Attansic AT123S chip, it is a PCI bus arbiter ... Yes, here are two more GD75232 chips - they provide two COM ports.

The lower right corner of the Epox EP-8RDA + motherboard, everything is densely populated here ... Place under the battery (I removed the battery itself), next to the jumper to reset BIOS settings to factory defaults. Well, the BIOS chip itself in the crib. It has a blue sticker with the code AA5. Two IDE sockets are blue, and below black is an FDD connector for connecting a floppy drive. Immediately we see the "cube" - an LED segment indicator - it displays the so-called POST codes when loading a PC. Now you will not find this on most top-end motherboards ...

On the bottom edge of the motherboard there are connectors on the front panel - under the buttons, LEDs, infrared sensor, speakerphone ... Then separately a third 3-pin connector for a fan, next to a group of contacts for a pair of external USB ports ... Two more white connectors - IEEE -1394 Firewire, also on external slats ... by the way, they come with the motherboard. This worthless interface lasted for almost 20 years ... very few used it, but it stuck out everywhere, accordingly affecting the cost. Next to the Realtek RTL8801B chip, it provides FireWire ... I could not resist and peeled the sticker off the BIOS chip - although it’s clear that there ... and there SST 94LF020 33-4C-NH ...

And finally, the South Bridge, otherwise I got tired of this motherboard ... This is NVIDIA nForce 2 MCP-T FB1705.1 ... There were two versions of the South Bridge: just MCP and MCP-T, that is, Turbo. This is a more advanced, but also more expensive version of the chip. Maybe this is why this chip is so hot? And there is no special cooling on it - even though the glue is a piece of aluminum! However, the North Bridge, as already mentioned, although it has cooling - it’s still very hot ... And here, too, there are two versions of the North Bridge: IGP - Integrated Graphics Processor, where the GeForce4 MX graphics core, which was quite powerful at that time, was integrated , and a cheaper version of SPP - which we have, but it does not have this video core. Thank God.

It's time to round off ... oh, cool mikruha - W83301DR-0, this is an ACPI-STR controller ... Well, okay, there are a lot of such things on the board.

The external connectors of the Epox EP-8RDA + motherboard, and everything is normal here: two PS / 2 connectors for a mouse and keyboard, four USB2.0 ports, one LPT and two COM ports, an RJ45 network connector and three audio connectors - 3.5 "mini Jackie.

The reverse side of the motherboard is empty here ... only the chipset - the north and south bridges have a kit of SMD elements ...

So, specifically, this motherboard initially worked in this configuration: the AMD Athlon XP 2000+ processor on the Thoroughbred core, then I changed it to AMD Athlon XP 2600+ with the Barton core ... What was the first video card - I don’t remember, and then there was Colorful NVIDIA FX5200 ...

I worked for myself and worked. And then for a long time the system unit was lying somewhere in the closet ... Until they finally decided to throw it away, but I took it for a description ... What can I say about the Epox EP-8RDA + motherboard, good or bad? In those days, it was a good motherboard, although the price was high. There is no SATA interface on the board ... well, it is clear - the motherboard was released in 2002-2003, and the first SATA revision was presented on January 7, 2003 - we would not have time to plug it ...

That's all - the motherboard is sent to the scrap.
